Bulls is a small town located North West of Palmerston North in the Rangitikei Region of Manawatu-Whanganui. With a small population of around 1,900, the town sits at the intersection of the road to Palmerston North and Whanganui and acts as a stop-off and service area, and a refreshment spot for the weary traveller.

Located 40km South of Whanganui and 30km North-West of Palmerston North, the town of Bulls started with a general store and hotel in 1858 and was established by an English settler called James Bull who owned the local hotel and store. At the time the area still had two recorded Maori toponyms going by O-hine-puhiawae and Te Ara Taumaihi.


Ngati Raukuwa marae was moved from the eastern bank to the western bank in 1897 after the Rangitikei river changed course. In the 1960s and 1970s, local Chris Amon was racing in Formula 1 participating as a driver. In modern times, the majority of Bull’s residents work at the nearby Ohakea air force base, and there are several shops selling antiques and collectibles.

Only 6.9% of Bulls residents have a bachelor’s degree and level seven qualification with 23.7% of the population claiming to not qualify whatsoever. However, the number of residents without qualifications has dropped from above 30% in 2013. Most students are dropped off at school with smaller portions preferring to walk or take a school bus.

Nearly 80% of residents in Bulls are of European descent. At 54.1%, the residents of Bulls are not into religion. With Christianity being the desired religion with a 33% following. There is Maori religion, beliefs, and philosophies but they make up only 2% of the entire population, other religions such as Spiritualism, New Age, Islam, and Hinduism are also present in Bulls. Religion has fallen since 2006 when Christianity had a 52% following but has since been overtaken by secular beliefs. The town has also experienced a slight growth in other religions, beliefs, and philosophies.
